For JHP’s very first installment of The Photographer Spotlight, I’ll be featuring one of my favorite, fellow photogs AND best friend, Tarah Schoof, of Tarah Elise Photography. I met this gorgeous lady during my first year at Ridgewater College. I was in the Photography Program, and she was in Marketing. Like other important relationships in my life, I met Tarah from a mutual friend that is no longer around. Since that day we first met at Walmart (HA!), we have been close, supportive friends in every aspect of our lives. In my second year of school, I got to room with my new bestie and create SO many fun memories. The amount of growth this Boss Lady has made in the last 2 years has been INCREDIBLE! Tarah is a real goal digger with a big heart. <3
- ABOUT TARAH:
I am a Minnesota based and destination natural light photographer with a passion for capturing a senior’s transition from high school to college, engagement and weddings for couples who are head over heels in love, and maternity sessions for all you beautiful glowing mamas-to-be out there.
When I am not snapping photos, you can usually find me driving to Iowa to visit my hunk of a boyfriend, surrounding myself with the ones I love the most, and laughing at the littlest of things. I love ANY sort of adventure that comes my way whether it be exploring my backyard or traveling across the country. I greatly enjoy capturing life’s sweetest moments, eating tons of chocolate chip cookies, meeting new creative souls, and laughing along the way!
That’s what I want to do with my clients. I want to get to know them on a personal level where we can dream together, explore together, and create the perfect session that portrays exactly who they are. I simply want them to feel comfortable, beautiful, and have fun. If along the way we find a common interest or share real, bellyaching laughter, then my heart will be full. I pride myself and my business on serving my clients, creating timeless images for them, and giving them a once in a lifetime experience!
- Describe your style.
My style is very bold in editing, but very airy and bohemian in the overall feel of my images and poses!
- What is your Go-To lens? Why?
I couldn’t live without my 50 mm. It’s my go to for almost everything. I love the sharp focus, the bokeh, and how versatile it is! I use it for seniors, engagements, weddings, and even maternity sessions!
- What sort of training have you done for your photography that you have found to be most beneficial? Ex. school, workshops, tutorials, lessons. etc.
I am mostly all self taught, but workshops, webinars, and articles are what really helped me grow in my business. I did one year of a photography program at Ridgewater College, but being that I was self taught for 5 years prior, it just wasn’t the time or place for me!
- What was your biggest epiphany or “Ah-HA!” moment in your photography?
Hmmm, that’s a tricky one. I would probably have to say when I joined the Rising Tide Society. I never realized just how many creative boss ladies/gents were facing the same daily struggles + victories as me, and that was just an overall comforting moment.
- Do you have a favorite lighting scenario?
NATURAL LIGHT! I live for that golden hour glowy sunlight!I love shooting indoors next to windows, or anywhere outside where the light is peaking in, I always shoot in the last three hours of the day for best lighting!
- Can you share a little bit about how you “find the light”?
I always look for light that is a little bit diffused by something such as a tree, landscape, or even a window! Shooting in open shade is best, but also ALWAYS shooting with the light behind your subject.
- We’d love to know more about your workflow and post-processing techniques! Care to share?
I love to brighten up all my images, make the colors for vibrant, and always add a pop of light in the eyes so my clients come to life through the images! I don’t do much heavy editing, but I always smooth the skin, get rid of an temporary flaws (acne, bruises, etc.), and I will crop or clone out anything that takes away from my clients in the images!
- What project(s) are you currently working on?
I am finishing up a 60+ page bridal guide for all my booked brides! I cannot WAIT!
- Who are some of your favorite creatives? Why?
Janelle Elise Photography is incredible in every way! From personality and serving her clients to gorgeous poses and excellent lighting, her images have always made my heart skip a beat!

- What advice do you have for growing photographers who LUST after your gorgeous images!?
Practice! You have to just get out there and shoot everything. Ask friends to model, practice lighting situations, bring your dreams to life! It is going to take time, but eventually you will find a style that you love!
